It has now become a rarity for a Vespa to be ridden with its original exhaust. No wonder, because the number of exhaust systems on the market is huge. It goes without saying that the various models have individual advantages and disadvantages and differ in terms of sound and performance. For the best personal purchase decision, it is worth comparing the most common exhaust systems directly with the original exhaust. The following comparison refers to the Vespa GTS 300, which is popular in Germany and Austria.

Two-stroke or four-stroke?

Before deciding to buy an exhaust system, it is important to know whether your Vespa is a two-stroke or a four-stroke. The greater difference in performance with a new exhaust system will be achieved with two-strokes. But even if the difference in performance is comparatively smaller with a four-stroke, the purchase can still be worthwhile, e.g. to give the machine a sporty look or to improve the sound. The Vespa GTS 300 is a four-stroke motorcycle.

Exhaust systems from Vespa

First of all, it makes sense to take a closer look at the original exhaust of the Vespa GTS 300. This has an output of 19.16 hp and a torque of 38.1 NM. Including the manifold, it is the heaviest option at 7.1 kg. However, one major advantage is that the exhaust is included in the price of the machine, whereas all other models have to be purchased separately.

In addition to the original exhaust, Vespa direkt offers a Vespa Sport exhaust as a slip-on model. This can be ordered directly from the dealer and fitted ex works, saving time and effort. At 4 kg, the sports exhaust is considerably lighter than the original exhaust and has a much more powerful sound. There is also a 0.77 Nm increase in torque. The price for the Vespa Sport exhaust is currently 1,199 euros.

Alternative exhaust systems

Alternatively, there is a cheaper alternative with top quality from SIP. The SIP SERIES PORDOI racing exhaust is very popular among racing specialists and ensures great riding fun on the track. The whole thing is available from SIP for just €399, but you have to take care of the installation yourself.

The Akrapovic Slip-On Line exhaust is particularly popular with many Vespa riders. It impresses with its sporty design and lively, deep sound. The difference in horsepower compared to the original exhaust is 0.48 hp. The torque is identical to that of the Vespa Sport exhaust. However, the Akrapovic model is a little heavier at 5 kg, but still significantly lighter than the standard model. The price of the Akrapovic Slip-On Line exhaust can vary slightly from online store to online store, but is around 900 euros at SIP Scootershop.

For those who prefer complete systems, the Polini BLACK EDITION could be of interest. With a price of 740 euros, it is a real bargain. But it’s not just the low price, but also the low weight of just 4.7 kg that appeals to numerous Vespa fans from all over the world. However, with a torque of 38.69 NM and 19.46 hp, the differences to the original exhaust are small.

The Remus exhaust is also a highly recommended complete system. At 4.6 kg, it is the lightest model of the complete systems available. The difference in performance compared to the original exhaust is 0.53 hp. In terms of torque, there is an increase of 0.66 NM. In terms of sound, the Remus exhaust can be classified between the standard exhaust and the Akrapovic model. The Remus exhaust system is currently priced at around 1,260 euros.

Conclusion: Which exhaust system is the right one?

The final decision for an exhaust system depends on numerous individual factors, so there can be no right or wrong. Ultimately, in addition to the technical facts and performance profiles of the various models, personal taste and the intention play a decisive role: Should the Vespa simply look sportier, sound better or achieve more power when riding? Of course, the price aspect should not be neglected either.

If it’s not just about looks and sound, but primarily about improved performance, the mapping of the individual exhaust systems can be decisive. If you look at the performance profiles in comparison, it is noticeable that the standard exhaust of the Vespa GTS 300 drops significantly in performance at higher speeds. However, there is hardly any difference in torque. As far as the pure increase in performance is concerned, the Vespa Sport exhaust is the clear winner in all the exhaust models compared.
